Why is your CV so important?
Your CV is the brochure for your personal brand. Get it right and it can open the door to the job of your dreams, well the interview, at least. Get it wrong and your carefully prepared personal marketing document will be in the shredder in a matter of moments.
A CV should always be written from scratch. By all means refer to a previous document, however, keep in mind how much you’ve learned, changed and grown since the last time you presented your CV to a potential employer. Always approach it with a fresh pair of eyes and an open mind.
At Fire Dragon we would always recommend following these CV writing guidelines:
- Keep it short and sweet and no more than 3 pages. If you’re finding it challenging to cut it down, take out any detail from the early part of your career. It’s the last 5-7 years that will be studied by a potential employer.
- Always draw focus to your achievements rather than your responsibilities. If you’re a sales person it’s pretty obvious you’ll be responsible for making sales and all the work that goes alongside that kind of role. If you’re a Financial Director it will be taken for granted that you can read a P&L and create a set of accounts.
- Clearly show all personal contact details. Make the life of the interviewer as easy as possible.
- A personal profile summary (no more than 3 lines) will help to frame your CV and give insight to the reader at a glance.
- Use bullet points and keep bullets to two lines.
- Always tailor your CV for specific roles. Consider what the employer is looking for and tailor the experience you list accordingly.
- Ask yourself, if I was employing someone in this role what attitude, skill sets and experience would I be looking for to put me at ease and give me confidence?

What do our clients say?
"Having not needed a CV in 10 years I found it a bit of a struggle looking back over my career to date. Trying to maximise the ‘good stuff’ without making it war and peace whilst also trying to keep it relevant but snappy. I EVENTUALLY whittled it down and got something together which i was fairly pleased with. I sent it off to Sarah for some advice and she pretty much tore it to pieces!! I gave Sarah free reign to re-shape it so it was fit for purpose and got the attention of head hunters and new prospective employers alike.
Out of interest, I sent my ORIGINAL CV ....AND the CV that Sarah pulled together to the head hunter. I asked which one he liked more without telling him why there were two versions. He said categorically, he would only be sending Sarah’s version to his clients.
Sarah’s skills to take a step back and cut to the chase is rare and invaluable when seeking new employment opportunities. Thanks Sarah!" Ian Waite, SW London
